Gabriela & La Buena Onda

Gabriela & La Buena Onda

Born into a S. American family & culture, Gabriela grew up in balmy southeast Florida, where eclectic music and summer breezes were always a staple. Saturday nights were spent listening to tango, Uruguayan folk music, the Beatles and old motown hits while her parents danced folklore.

Gabriela began writing and playing in Orlando, FL for several years, while building a small following, released a demo in 2002 and then released her first full length album in 2004, ‘In the Interim’, produced by Davey Schweizer and recorded at Richter Records Studio. ‘Love Your Everything’, a song from the album, made it on the rotation at WPRK 91.5.

In early 2014, Gabriela relocated to San Diego, CA, where she continues to grow her grass roots following. Her unique blend of soulful, jazzy, latin, funky acoustic pop soothes your soul and melts your ears. Her warm tone and laid back demeanor sends chill love vibes up and down your spine. She is currently in the studio working on tracks to be released in spring of 2014. And you can catch her on tour with Roger!

Bit Maps

Bit Maps

Singer / songwriter Drew Andrews, formerly of Via Satellite and The Album Leaf, has launched a new project called Bit Maps.  The band features the same lineup as Andrews’ backing band for his solo material: James Zzyzzyx, Josh Carlson, Erik Nordgaard and Matt Bennett.

Andrews describes Bit Maps as “influenced a lot by electronic music,” but translated into live instrumental arrangements. And the group will also incorporate more samples than Andrews did with his solo work.

“It’s a concept sort of record that revolves around themes like the title suggests—how everything is right at our hands… how we’re sort of evolving into a new human person and the integration of home life and cyber life,” he says. “It’s not necessarily that I’m against technology. To me, we’re at a time and place where there’s not enough of a filter. It seemed like a good time to explore that.”

The Cherry Bluestorms

The Cherry Bluestorms

Ex-Dickies guitarist Glen Laughlin and solo artist Deborah Gee formed this late ‘60’s British Pop-influenced band in Los Angeles. Since releasing their well-received and reviewed debut, “Transit of Venus”, they have been compared to The Stone Roses, The Pretenders and a cross between The Darkness and Abba! The band has played the dates on the East Coast and Canada as well as the Cavern Club in Liverpool. The Bluestorms’ second album, “Bad Penny Opera” is a song cycle and love letter to the band’s influences, due out later this year.

Schizophonics

Schizophonics

Channeling the spirit of Jimi Hendrix and Iggy Pop—the “yin and yang of music,” as Beers calls them— Schitzophonics offer up some of the most fun psych-rock in San Diego. They might not be the best musicians— their riffs are simple, Beers says his lyrics are “gibberish” and his solos mostly consist of gnarled string bends. But their raw energy is downright narcotic.

Ernie Orosco

Ernie Orosco

With his soaring vocals, innovative song writing skills,  Ernie A. Orosco stands as a true original. Ernie’s sound could be described as electronica, soulful, ethereal influenced by eighties synth pop, new wave, world music, masterfully blending elements from psychedelia, classical, ambient and experimental genres skillfully displaying his ability to craft memorable musical vignettes to stand the test of time. Celebrating life’s achievements as well as vulnerably delving into his own personal life experiences of love loss and lessons learned, his stylized creations are easily relatable. Each track lyrically and musically is unique to itself lending the listener to fully absorb its story evoking questions, sharing that common thread of emotion. Ernie’s rich voice will entrance you displaying great range and control emoting an array of feelings, the very staple of his distinct sound. All vocals, and individual instruments excluding three guitar tracks were written and performed by Ernie himself. Listeners are often surprised to discover that Ernie can play just about any instrument he can get his hands on. Being a solo artist he relies on technology to ensure his true, full sound while performing.

Misc. Ailments

Misc. Ailments

This crew is not a freshman band. Lead vocals with guitar and keyboard is not new. Nor is it easy. But front man Ochosa seemed to handle it fine. Ruben says he’s been doing this for a decade now. I’m not too sure if that just includes his music growth. He however commands the center stage like a conductor of a whirl wind orchestra of four.  They are known as Miscellaneous Ailments. Richard P. Ibarra – Bass/ Vox Cameron Foley – Drums Ruben A. Ochosa Jr. – Vox/Guitar/Keyboard Tyler Alvord – Saxophone/ Aux Fonso Payumo Jr. – Guitar/Vox By far, I thought the most well demeanored group of minstrels on tonight’s lineup. Their music play was Alternative Sexy.

Scott Samuels

Scott Samuels

Scott Samuels is a rock and roll survivor with lots of stories to tell. An imaginative singer-songwriter who, according to powerpopaholic.com, “plays a mean axe”.  As San Diego’s SLAMM Magazine once said, he definitely “knows his way around a pop hook” – and back again. Throughout his life, Samuels’ love for rock and roll’s “hidden treasure”, and his unique ability to recount the quirkiest milestones of life, love and career, has fueled his songwriting and performances. His simple, honest and unpretentious vocal style has drawn comparisons to Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum, and Elvis Costello, among others.

Samuels is now mining the rich history of his musical and personal past and present with the release of his first full-length solo CD, “Great Big World.” An ambitious first solo outing, his CD includes eight of original songs and two covers of tunes that resonate with Samuels in a big way – The Plimsouls’ “Great Big World” and Errol Brown’s (Hot Chocolate) “It Started with a Kiss.” A songwriter extraordinaire, Samuels seemingly remembers every detail of his life – a boon for those of us that appreciate vivid storytelling.

League of Liars

League of Liars

The League of Liars was born one fine autumn morning in the back of a Bentley touring car, en route to Cardiff-By-The-Sea (along the lackadaisical Pacific Coast Highway). Unified in the desire to provide the most believable and sweetest-smelling contradictions known to humankind, Sppike Mike (Bass), Diamond David (Guitar), Rumble T (Drums) and Micheal Fairchild (Vocals, Guitar) plot sonic assaults with Love-In precision. Blending blues, funk, folk, rock and pop genres in the creation of a super sweet and fun outcome that just can’t be ignored. Ask your ass why it’s moving when you hear our tunes.
This sonic potion has garnered the boys much acclaim. From local music show live air play, The Local 94.9 and 91X Loudspeaker, to winning the 2011 San Diego County Fair’s people’s choice award with LOL has been invited back to play the fair ever since.

Skyler Lutes

Skyler Lutes

He is a troubadour by definition, using his acoustic guitar as the foundation for music that takes in rock and reggae with a decidedly surf or beach vibe. However, there is much more to his sound. He is a multi-faceted performer whose music will bring a smile, whether you catch a solo performance or a full band set.

Lutes is a multi-instrumentalist, who plays drums, bass, keys and guitar, and is also heavily involved in production work, “but I really enjoy singing the most,” he said, “as it has the most emotion involved,” In addition to his solo career, he’s also been involved in several notable bands over the years, including Hawaiian group Makua Rothman Band, Riverside-based indie rockers Everything Said, Aquile, from TV’s “The Voice,” and multiple San Diego Music Awards nominees the Defamation League.

Home grown in San Diego, Imagery Machine is no stranger to the city’s eclectic music scene. Its members include five of the city’s most talented young veterans, who only recently came together to create an ethereal, yet driven style of music. While the group would describe themselves as female-fronted San Diego rock, Imagery Machine also embodies the spiritual reincarnation of classic jam bands from yesteryear, adding to it their unique, modern perspective. Comprised of lead guitarist James Howard, drummer Tyler Shimkus, bassist Will Mino, and backup vocalist Kristin Jennings, the accomplished quintet is heralded by the haunting, soulful lead vocals of Jennie Grunstad. Just like their live shows, Imagery Machine’s recently released, self-titled EP evokes powerful, touching emotionalism paired with intimate lyrics and a galvanic beat that is all too rare in the modern age.

Mittens

Mittens is a San Diego band specializing in the revolutionary genre of Cat Pop. The group started as a duo between longtime friends Lia and Ramona in 2009, eventually picking up guitarist Paul and drummer Tyler through well-timed classified ads. Mittens debuted as a fully formed group in May of 2012, and haven’t stopped creating and performing since.

Mittens is heavily influenced by the pop sensibilities of The Cardigans, Tiger Trap, The Pretenders, and Rilo Kiley; just to name a few. The melodic vocals of Ramona, Lia, and Paul blend splendidly with the upbeat, surf-infused pop that’s nostalgic of 90s female-fronted bands like The Cranberries. Mittens’ symphonic sounds have been a huge hit around San Diego, and it’s clear when seeing them live that they have as big a blast playing as the audience does listening.

Josh Jack Jones, aka Chicago Semisweet, was born in Chicago in 1981, on the same day the John Bull became the oldest operating steam locomotive in the world.

While music was his true calling, Josh also had to make a living.  He became a notorious criminal defense attorney, defending, among others, the notorious Foo Nuts and Booty Shot.  He usually lost and it made him sad, so he’s trying to figure out a way to make money, work very little and play lots of music.

Nick Crook

Nick Crook

…is a 19 year old Singer/Songwriter originally hailing from a small suburb outside Fort Worth, TX. Though born and raised in the south for a good portion of his life, he also spent a lot of time in an even smaller town on the North Shore, located on the island of O’ahu, HI. This upbringing in two totally different areas left Nick with a very wide sense of musical taste, which can be heard in his own songs today.

At the young age of 12, Nick took up the guitar after hearing his father play “If I Fell” by The Beatles on his own guitar. He had his dad show him some of the basic chords (“this is how you play a G, this is how you play a D…”) and taught himself from there. It was a few years later that he had started singing and writing, eventually moving to San Diego, CA to pursue his music career after finishing high school.  Though he had been writing for years at this point, it was here that he started finding “his sound”, developing a unique blend of blues, soul, funk, and sometimes even folk (with many other unlisted influences) as his style. He has drawn comparisons to John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Adam Levine, Jack Johnson and others, though Nick aims to bring a flavor all of his own to the table.

Christopher Leyva and Cantua

Though a longtime mainstay of San Diego\’s music scene, Chris Leyva was actually born in a small town outside of Oaxaca, Mexico. He arrived in San Diego as an eight-year-old. An insatiable music fan, Leyva was soon hooked on the idea of rock ‘n’ roll. “Lots of my friends don’t recall knowing what they wanted out of life that early, but strangely I do,” he laughs. “I remember hearing, the intro to “Jailhouse Rock,” it still gives me chills.” He cites The Beatles, Nirvana, The Rembrandts as major influences, but it was a San Diego artist who pushed Leyva to pursue his own projects. Leyva plays guitar, piano and sings in all his bands, though he considers the lost art of arranging to be his main talent.Restless to a fault, in addition to his own solo work, he fronts a band, Blizzard and also works with indie-rock trio Revolution 89.

Johnny Tarr

Originally from Cardiff, Wales, Jonny Tarr picked up the Tenor Saxophone at the age of 11 thinking it would get him girls. Initially it didn’t. After cutting his teeth in the British Jazz scene, he studied music at Paul McCartney’s Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts and went on to play all over Europe (Glastonbury Festival Jazz World Stage, The Big Chill, Chamonix’s Cham Jam), and as far Japan (Tokyo Crossover Jazz Festival) and the USA (New York, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Las Vegas) over the next decade. Now a permanent resident of San Diego, Jonny Tarr has been working on making Electronic Soul music in many formats; mainly as a solo artist but increasingly with a band behind him. Playing at San Diego’s clubs and music venues, (The Belly Up, Analog, Vin de Syrah, Humphrey’s) Jonny has been refining his sound and is always ready to take it further.

Rob Deez & Kenny Eng

Rob Deez & Kenny Eng

Rob Deez is an acoustic hip hop comedian.  He raps about Ramen noodles, burritos, DUIs and 40-ounce beers accompanied by hip hop beats on a classical guitar, for crying out loud. He is the court jester of the San Diego music scene, probably a role he cherishes. Deez incorporates the acoustic singer-songwriter sentiment to many of his tunes, not just with the obvious employment of his acoustic guitar, but with a subtle infusion of emotional longing and romance.

Kenny Eng released of his debut EP “Self Centered” in June of 2008. And “Self Centered” was no average collection of songs from the stereotypic, starry-eyed troubadour. These self-penned songs were intelligent, challenging and mature both musically and lyrically and the complexity of these songs made Kenny an immediate standout in the singer/songwriter community.

What makes Kenny different from so many other artists is the fact that his sound is so hard to categorize. He is equal parts Motown R&B, classic rock and Jeff Buckley but not really any of them at the same time. He can shift from the dark, ominous landscape heard on “The Tongue” to the whimsical, light-hearted “If I See You Again” in a split second.

Kennady Tracy

Hi, I’m Kennady, I’m a 15 year old singer/songwriter/guitarist from California! I have been writing since I was five, but seriously working at my craft since I was 10. I have always loved to put on a show, ever since I was walking I would perform at family events, and even try to sing songs that I had heard on CD’s my parents would play around the house. I found my love for music by myself without any parent/adult influence, and nobody ever forced me into playing an instrument or taking voice lessons, doing music is something I have chosen to pursue. At 11 years old I began playing guitar and taking voice lessons.  I wouldn’t really classify myself under a specific genre yet other than singer/songwriter, but my favorite styles of music are pop, alternative and singer/songwriter’s.

His wavering tenor brings life to lyrics about mysterious hauntings, broken hearts and city parks in the springtime. Preacher vs Choir, the brainchild of Chris Mosher, started out as a three piece anarchist hip hop group. He and drummer James Zzyzyzx continued under the moniker cultivating a network to which PVC owes the majority of it’s success. Known for self depricating humor and harsh critique of capitalism and civilization, he doesn’t take himself so seriously as he does our current predicament. Adrián started his dance career at the fresh age of 15 in Oakland, California. He started like most millennials do nowadays, learning from Youtube and making home videos. Wanting to share his love for dance, he started a dance club at his high school, De La Salle. In 2010, he moved to southern California to attend the University of California, San Diego; where he co-founded the first and only popping club on campus, Poptikz. Feeling a deep connection to popping, he decided he would strive to master the style and create his own style with its foundations. In his undergrad career, he became an integral part of the freestyle community in San Diego by performing, competing, sessioning, and hosting jams.

Now more alive and passionate than ever, he has started his own small business, teaching private lessons and workshops, judging competitions, and spreading the passion and love for the art that has changed his life.

Crossed Swords – A Fencing Demo

Crossed Swords – A Fencing Demo
The Cabrillo Academy of the Sword was opened in February of 1996 at the location it still occupies. Because it is on the second floor of an 80 yr-old building, it was necessary to establish it as a private club for able-bodied members of the U.S. Fencing Association only, and it has maintained that identity since. It has a threefold mission: (1) to provide a source of high-level, professional fencing instruction for the San Diego area (2) To offer a place for recreational fencers to learn the sport and to enjoy it on a regular basis, and (3) To provide the facilities, instruction and training to enable tournament fencers to be successful at the highest competitive levels.
That the club has been able to achieve these goals can be determined by the fact that roughly two-thirds of its members are recreational fencers, almost all of whom learned to fence right here. In competition, our fencers have won two national championships in Women’s saber, and have earned national medals in Junior Men’s Epee, Men’s Foil and Veteran Men’s Saber. Locally Cabrillo fencers have captured a large portion of the gold, silver, & bronze medals warded in San Diego every year.
Of our approximately 100 members, about a third are female. Currently our youngest fencers are 10 years old while our oldest are in their eighties.
Fencing is classified as a “Lifetime Sport” by the president’s council of Physical Fitness, which means that it can be learned and enjoyed at almost any age. However for instructional reasons, we set a minimum age of 10 years for participation in our group classes, but will take a student as young as eight for private lessons.

I am a clown and a circus performer specializing in the arts of contortion and sideshow.
I am a natural born freak and an anatomical wonder! I was born with the genetic disorder Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), which affects my body’s connective tissue. EDS makes my joints and ligaments hyperflexible, allowing an extreme range of motion in my whole body, even including hyperelasticity of the skin. With years of training, I was able to turn this condition into an impressive skill set, by learning the mesmerizing art of contortion. I perform all types of contortion including backbending, frontbending, splits, dislocation and enterology.
With a background in improv comedy, and a lifelong love for the circus, it is unsurprising that I became a clown. I find that the combination of contortion and comedy makes for a very unique and exciting form of entertainment.

Circus Mafia – Whodini, sword swallowing

Sword swallowing is an ancient skill in which the performer passes asword through the mouth and down the esophagus to the stomach. This feat is not swallowing in the traditional sense; the natural processes that constitute swallowing do not take place, but are repressed in order to keep the passage from the mouth to the stomach open for the sword. The practice is dangerous and there is risk of injury.
